Three people were fatally shot and four others were wounded early Sunday at an after-hours venue on Detroit's west side that police say was already known to authorities. Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said officers responded after a ShotSpotter alert shortly after 7:20 a.m. local time and discovered three men suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Four additional victims, including two men and two women, were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
"We will work this around the clock relentlessly to bring the perpetrator to justice," Bettison said during a news conference at the scene. The chief was joined at the scene by Mayor Mary Sheffield, City Council President James Tate, members of the Board of Police Commissioners, Detroit Violence Intervention partners, Ceasefire organizations and Community Violence Intervention leaders. Newsweek was referred to the press conference by the mayor's office and police department when requesting more information by email on Sunday.
The shooting marks another mass-casualty gun violence incident in Detroit and comes as city leaders continue investing in violence-interruption and crime-reduction initiatives. According to Gun Violence Archive (GVA), which defines a mass shooting as 4 or more people shot, there have been three other mass shooting events in Detroit since the beginning of 2026. Those include a deadly shooting on Sherwood Street in February where 2 people were killed and another 2 were injured; A shooting on Plymouth Road in July that saw 4 victims and 1 suspect injured; a third shooting in August on Haverhill Street where four people were injured.
Bettison emphasized on Sunday that the effects of gun violence extend beyond the victims themselves, saying authorities remain committed to both identifying those responsible and supporting affected families. "I did meet some of the family members before I briefed the press," he said. "Once again, thoughts and prayers.
We're going to support the families of this as well." Sheffield, who encouraged anyone with information to come forward, said there would be "robust services" for the community and families impacted by the deadly incident. Police said the three people killed were adult males believed to be approximately 30 years old or older. Their identities had not yet been released pending notification of relatives.
The four surviving victims included two men and two women. According to Bettison, one of the injured women is in her 20s. The injured men were reported to be in their 20s and 30s.
