The NFL preseason is set to conclude on Saturday, leaving league coaches and front offices limited time to trim their rosters to 53 players by Sunday's deadline. We could see some interesting trade moves involving quarterbacks around the deadline. After Sunday, teams will turn their attention to Week 1 of the regular season.
By this point in August, most league teams have decided on their starting quarterback. Some quarterbacks left out of the musical chairs from the preseason could become attractive options in the trade market. Per Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado, league teams have made calls with "varying degrees of interest" on Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Dillon Gabriel (Cleveland Browns), J.J.
McCarthy (Minnesota Vikings) and Anthony Richardson (Indianapolis Colts). Indianapolis has failed to find a suitor willing to pay the right price for the 2023 first-round pick.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn't want to give Richardson away for nothing. McCarthy, a first-round pick in 2024, could be looking for a fresh start after the Vikings signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray this offseason. Minnesota gave Murray the starting job during training camp.
Gabriel has a strong dress rehearsal on Thursday night if the Browns want to trade the 2025 third-round pick. He threw for three touchdowns in the Browns' win over the New England Patriots in their final preseason game. Deshaun Watson has been named Cleveland's starter in Week 1.
Shedeur Sanders is expected to be Watson's backup, and could get a chance to start at some point this season. Tagovailoa has not had a strong training camp with the Falcons. Despite Michael Penix Jr. having missed 11-on-11 periods during training camp due to an injury, the Falcons have not named Tagovailoa the starter for their contest in Week 1 at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
