The digital tool is the result of a three-year collaborative project between the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and health insurance provider AOK Bayern.
The app marks the successful completion of "Strengthening Bavarian Teachers' Health-Related Competencies" (BaLko), a three-year collaborative project conducted by AOK Bayern and the Technical University of Munich. The project sought to strengthen teachers' health literacy and encourage health-promoting behaviors. In doing so, it aimed to improve not only teachers' own health but also the health of the entire school community.
More than 1,400 teachers in Bavaria participated in the research project. Their involvement enabled the researchers to scientifically analyze the health-related challenges teachers face, including mental health concerns, stress management and the ability to remain in the profession over the long term. Based on the findings, the researchers developed several health profiles.
Each profile incorporates characteristics such as health literacy, the ability to set boundaries between work and personal life, emotional commitment to the profession and support from colleagues. It shows where an individual's particular pressures, strengths and needs lie. Working with teachers, the researchers also developed tailored resources to support health for each of the different profiles.
These include exercises for setting clearer boundaries around work, guided reflection, journal prompts and video-based content. The resulting concept, from analyzing an individual health profile using a questionnaire to providing personalized health-promoting recommendations, was then incorporated into the BaLko app. The app offers brief health exercises and activities that teachers can complete independently and flexibly during the school day, including during breaks.
It is available to download free of charge for iOS and Android. "Parents want their children to learn and grow up in a healthy environment. That is why strengthening prevention and health promotion in schools throughout Bavaria is an important priority for AOK Bayern.
