Social media users questioned ‘what happened to finder’s keepers’ after police posted about the theft online

A man who seemingly thought he lucked out after finding $30 on the ground at a Georgia Walmart instead became the subject of a police manhunt after pocketing the cash. Cops in Albany, a city in southwest Georgia, were seeking public assistance to identify the man who picked up the $30 bill off the ground and kept it instead of turning it in. This individual picked up the money and did not turn it in to the employees,” the Albany Police Department wrote in a Facebook post on August 18, along with a picture of the alleged suspect walking through the store.

Police asked anyone with information that could lead to the man’s identification to call their tipline. Social media users had a field day making fun of the police department’s all-out effort to bring justice to the shopper. Others were more critical of the police department for the post.

Lol,” another person quipped. Another user added: “I thought this was satire when I came across the story.” In an update to the post, police said that the man involved “returned the money to the victim.” “The victim initially wished to pursue charges, but after the money was returned, advised that they no longer wished to press charges. No charges will be filed,” police said.

Georgia law states that if a person takes possession of property they know for a fact is lost without first trying to return it, that could count as theft.
