Adam Hamilton has clinched a historic victory in the US Senate race in Kansas, fueling the country’s Democratic takeover of Congress as voters in key battleground states expressed frustration with Donald Trump. It’s the first time a Democrat has been elected to represent Kansas in the Senate since 1932. With his victory speech, Hamilton, a longtime pastor, transformed a crowded hotel ballroom into his own congregation, his podium into a pulpit.

Speaking at a hotel in Overland Park, he recited Bible passages and the parable of Good Samaritan in his address. How would our policies and our politics change if we treated people this way?” Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall, 66, who served as US senator for the state since 2021 and was elected to the US House of Representatives for two terms. But it was Marshall’s work as an obstetrician that factored heavily into his re-election campaign, after the New York Times reported that he had sued hundreds of his patients for unpaid bills, including dozens who were arrested after missing their court dates.

Kansas emerged as an unexpected battleground this year. The closely watched Cook Political Report rated the race as a toss-up, noting it was one of several agriculture-heavy areas to be hit hard by high fuel and fertilizer prices because of Trump’s war on Iran. Hamilton ultimately won over Marshall with 51.1% of the vote, according to the AP’s tally as of early Wednesday morning.

Democratic pastor Hamilton, 62, leads the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, United Methodist Church of the Resurrection based in the Kansas City area. He calls himself an “independent-minded Democrat” and had argued Kansas would benefit from having one US senator from each party. The state’s other seat is held by Republican Jerry Moran.

Hamilton, who has frequently said that decency was on the ballot, pledged to become “Jerry Moran’s best friend” and bring members of both parties together to “solve problems, like it used to be”. Trump won Kansas handily in 2024, and sought to inspire Republican turnout by hosting rallies in the state leading up to election day. But Marshall’s liabilities, particularly the medical billing scandal, and Hamilton’s attempt at a pragmatic bipartisan appeal helped tighten the race this year.

Several of the counties Marshall won in 2020 flipped for Hamilton this year, according to AP election data, and even the counties he did win were by much narrower margins than in his last election. Hamilton, who branded himself as a centrist with the slogan, “leading from the middle”, joined several other “prairie populists” this year to win over Republican strongholds by leaning on populist messaging and vowing to stand up to corruption and corporate interests. Hamilton also successfully tapped into voter concerns about the high cost of living, as did many other successful Democrats in tight races.
