The New England Patriots suffered a disappointing 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in their season opener, and also may have lost their new wide receiver, AJ Brown, for multiple games. Brown debuted for the Patriots in Wednesday night's game and had three receptions for 26 yards. He nearly scored an early touchdown to put the Patriots ahead, but a Seahawks defender got in the way, drawing a penalty.
Later, Dake Maye's underthrown pass to Brown in the third quarter also had Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett going after the ball. Pritchett's right knee landed on Brown's right ankle, keeping the receiver down for a bit. Patriots staff eventually helped him off the field, and Brown didn't return for the rest of the game.
After the game, head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about Brown's injury and said he had no updates yet. More news: Hall of Fame QB Makes Huge Joe Burrow Prediction for Bengals Season On Thursday morning, NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo reported that Brown is "believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain" and would undergo an MRI to determine his timeline for a return. Brown was the Patriots' big offseason acquisition, as they traded with the Philadelphia Eagles to land the three-time Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl champion.
So far, it doesn't appear the injury will keep Brown out for too long, but that remains to be seen. During his career, Brown's generally been healthy and never missed more than four games in any season. Without Brown, Maye still has a solid receiving corps, featuring another new offseason acquisition, Romeo Doubs, as well as Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, and Hunter Henry.
Hollins led all Patriots with 51 receiving yards on four receptions. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson had 44 receiving yards, while rookie tight end Eli Raridon scored the only New England touchdown, courtesy of a two-yard pass from Maye. New England will host Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers for their next game on Sunday, Sept. 20.
