Arch Manning's Starting Job at Texas in Question After Sarkisian Comments

Steve Sarkisian raises questions about Arch Manning's starting role after Texas suffers a second consecutive loss.

Arch Manning's future as Texas' starting quarterback may be in jeopardy following another disappointing performance by the Longhorns. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian did little to quiet speculation about a potential quarterback change after Saturday's 27-24 loss to Florida, the team's second consecutive defeat against an unranked opponent. When asked about Manning's performance and whether a change at quarterback was being considered, Sarkisian acknowledged that Texas' offensive struggles would require a closer examination.

"We're not playing good offensive football right now, so everything is going to be evaluated," Sarkisian said following the game. According to CBS’ Bob Ballou, Sarkisian was then asked specifically whether Manning would be included in that evaluation. "Everything means everything," Sarkisian responded.

The comments drew attention because Sarkisian had publicly defended Manning following Texas' loss to Oklahoma just one week earlier. Manning completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown against Florida, but a costly fourth-quarter turnover overshadowed his performance. With Texas trailing by three points and attempting a late comeback, Manning was sacked and lost a fumble with less than two minutes remaining.

Florida recovered the ball and secured the victory. However, Manning's performance was hardly the only issue facing the Longhorns. Texas managed just 96 yards on 19 plays during the second half.

Florida also recorded five sacks and held the Longhorns to two conversions on 10 third-down attempts. Sarkisian acknowledged that the evaluation would extend beyond the quarterback position, with the coaching staff examining its offensive execution, approach and play-calling. The struggles have been especially disappointing considering the expectations surrounding Manning, who entered Texas as one of the nation's most highly regarded quarterback prospects.

Although Sarkisian has not announced a change to his starting lineup, his comments leave open the possibility of the Longhorns considering other options. Sophomore quarterback K.J. Lacey is among the available alternatives.
