Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams took another step in his development last season with new head coach Ben Johnson. However, there was one area of Williams' game that trended downward: His completion percentage. So, with another NFL offseason under Williams' belt, Johnson shared where the third-year quarterback is in that process.
Red zone was a big emphasis for us last year, we got a few good reps of that yesterday. I think he’s shown significant strides there. He’s taking a lot of pride on where he’s putting the ball throughout practice.
You see it early on, in our warmup periods, to routes on air and it’s translating over to the team periods as well, and yet he still hasn’t lost that stinger of being aggressive and trying to push the limits a little bit. I think that’s healthy, particularly in practice, just seeing how tight of windows we can fit these things into. There’s a good delicate balance. . . .
He’s making significant strides each and every day.” That is certainly good news as the Bears look ready to become true contenders in 2026. But in order for that to happen, Williams must establish himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. While he made nice strides last season while passing for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions, his 58.1% completion percentage left much to be desired.
If Williams has and can continue improving that area of his game, the Bears will be a tough out for any team. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Williams played college football at Oklahoma (2021) and USC, where he threw for 8,170 yards, 72 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions from 2022-23 while also being named the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner.
