After defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their home opener, the Bengals visited CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans for Week 2. Based on game performances and the final score, the Bengals may be a legitimate AFC contender again, thanks to Joe Burrow and Chase.
In the second quarter, Burrow stepped back and threw a deep ball to Chase as he was headed to the end zone. Chase, who had a Texans defender in front of him, stumbled, but somehow managed to collect himself enough to make a catch. Replays confirm that Chase scored the touchdown in an early-season contender for the best catch of this year. As the Bengals' highlight clip circulated heavily on social media, fans weighed in with their thoughts on what they just witnessed. "The body control of the spin and toe tap to make this catch is INCREDIBLE," a commenter wrote, reacting to Chase's catch.
"Might be the greatest catch of the year and nobody will top that all year," another commenter said. Others commented, "That’s not human," and "This is one of the best catches I have seen in my life." Chase finished the Bengals' Week 2 game with seven receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. He scored his second TD in the third quarter with an 18-yard reception from Burrow.
Cincinnati ultimately won the game 20-6, improving to 2-0 in their early season. Chase previously mentioned wanting to set a new record for most touchdowns caught by a receiver in a single season. Retired NFL legend Randy Moss holds that record, 23, thanks to getting his receptions from another legend, Tom Brady, during the New England Patriots' 2007 season.
Sunday's two touchdowns were the first of this season for Chase, who would need another 22 before the season ends to officially set that record. The Bengals next visit Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 27.
