Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was fully cleared to return to 11-on-11 practice action this past weekend, marking the latest step in his recovery process following the ACL injury he suffered last season. Penix is currently listed as a co-starter alongside fellow quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as the team has yet to decide on its Week 1 starter. At practice on Wednesday, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson was asked how Penix is looking upon his return to full-speed action.

It was definitely a ramp up for him," Robinson said, via Luke Hetrick. "I think he felt comfortable. He looked fast." Penix started nine games for the Falcons last year before suffering his season-ending ACL injury in Week 11.

Through his time on the field, he completed 60.1% of his pass attempts for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Penix will not play in the Falcons' preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins on Friday night, the team announced. Tagovailoa will get the start against his former team, and Cooper Rush and Jack Strand will come off the bench.

Atlanta will open up its 2026 regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 13.
