The University of North Carolina took serious action in late July, placing general manager Michael Lombardi on administrative leave. The decision came after a human resources complaint was filed against him by a former front office employee. At the time, Lombardi was the highest-paid GM in college football, earning around $1.5 million annually.
The university launched a formal investigation shortly after, and on Thursday, Sept. 3, Lombardi officially resigned from the position, though the investigation remains ongoing. However, according to WRAL, the investigation has since shifted its focus onto Steve Belichick, the team's defensive coordinator and son of head coach Bill Belichick. UNC is reportedly investigating whether Belichick used drugs while with the team or provided drugs to at least one player.
The university is also looking into a separate matter involving a potential sexual relationship with a player. Before joining UNC in 2025 as defensive coordinator, he served as DC at the University of Washington, and prior to that worked under his father with the NFL's New England Patriots, coaching safeties, defensive backs, and outside linebackers at various points.
Steve is currently on medical leave and missed North Carolina's season opener against TCU on Saturday, Aug. 29. No timetable has been given for his return, and Bill Belichick, along with the rest of the defensive staff, has stepped in to handle coordinator duties. Given the ongoing investigation and Lombardi's resignation, it's reasonable to speculate that Steve's leave is connected — but nothing has been confirmed, and the situation remains fluid.
