"Brand New Day" just crossed $800 million domestically, the fastest movie ever to hit the milestone “Insidious: Out of the Further” won’t topple the box office reign of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” The sixth “Insidious” installment is targeting $23 million to $27 million in its domestic debut, likely enough for second place on North American charts. Both movies hail from Sony. Unless “Out of the Further” beats expectations, the latest “Insidious” won’t improve upon the start of its predecessor, 2023’s “The Red Door,” which opened to $33 million.

However, the paranormal sequel cost just $18 million to produce, so it won’t require a huge turnout to reap box office rewards. This film serves as a sequel to “Insidious: The Red Door” and follows a new family as they explore the creepy concept of “the Further” — a purgatorial place inhabited by the tortured spirits of the dead. The 2013 sequel “Insidious: Chapter 2” currently stands as the biggest debut in the franchise with $40 million, however “The Red Door” ranks as the highest-grossing entry to date with $189 million worldwide.

This weekend also sees the release of Lionsgate’s action-thriller “Mutiny,” starring Jason Statham, as well as Black Bear’s comedy “Spa Weekend,” led by Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau. Neither film is expected to break out in its opening weekend. It cost $40 million to produce; Lionsgate acquired North American rights but didn’t finance the film.

Statham plays a former marine who has to prove his innocence after he’s framed for murdering his billionaire boss. It carries a roughly $20 million price tag. Directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the movie follows three burned-out childhood besties who travel to a luxury resort in Palm Springs.

Those films are expected to land behind “The Odyssey,” which should bring in roughly $15 million in its sixth weekend of release. Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster is the second-biggest movie of the year with $504 million in North America and $1.29 billion worldwide to date. Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will continue its epic box office run.

The Tom Holland-led Spidey adventure just crossed $800 million domestically after 19 days, the fastest film to hit the milestone and fourth movie ever to do so. With $804 million in North America and $2.04 billion globally to date, it’s already the eighth-highest grossing movie in history, trailing just 2009’s “Avatar” ($2.9 billion), 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.7 billion), 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($2.3 billion), 1994’s “Titanic” ($2.2 billion), 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion) and 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2.05 billion). This summer has been the biggest since the pandemic upended the industry, with revenues surpassing $4 billion for only the second time since COVID.
