Former Notre Dame and LSU head coach Brian Kelly is in the football wilderness this season, spending the year in media instead of on a sideline. Kelly has said he's not done coaching, though, and there's belief that he could have a new program to lead as soon as next season. Kelly recently appeared on SiriusXM College Sports Radio with Danny Kanell and addressed the chatter around him and a possible coaching change at Rutgers, where the Scarlet Knights have gotten off to an 0-3 start under head coach Greg Schiano.
If the school were to move on from Schiano, Kelly would have the resume to fill the spot. The only question is if he'd be a cultural fit, something that's been an issue for Kelly in the past. When Kelly was with the LSU Tigers, he famously adopted a Louisiana twang when greeting LSU fans at a basketball game shortly after his hiring.
"It's a great night to be a Tiger. I'm here with my family and I'm so excited to be in the great state of Louisiana," he said, with his pronunciation of the word "family" drawing a lot of attention. Piscataway, New Jersey, is quite different from the bayous of Louisiana, but Kelly joked that he can adjust to those new environs if the job is open.
"I could do the Jersey accent," he said, as detailed by Matthew Glenesk and John Leuzzi of USA Today. "I can do anyone you want." On a more serious note, Kelly also said he doesn't love that someone else's job security is being discussed. "Well, you can imagine coming from my perspective as a sitting football coach when I was in that position, you hate hearing the rumors because it means somebody's job is being evaluated.
And so it's uncomfortable for me. I don't feel easy about it," he said. "I think we all know it's something that gets out in the media and it's talked about because it's juicy, right?
But for me, I just focus on what I'm doing on a day-to-day basis, and those things take care of themselves. Those that are making those decisions, they have a plan. This is really just about getting media hits and something to talk about.
