Bryce Underwood Gets More Bad News Ahead of Michigan's Indiana Clash

Bryce Underwood faces another difficult twist as Michigan prepares for one of its biggest tests of the season against Indiana.

Bryce Underwood's time as Michigan's starting quarterback could be over. The former five-star recruit was benched at halftime in the Penn State game last weekend, after completing just 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards and throwing two interceptions. True freshman quarterback Tommy Carr then stepped in and led the Wolverines to a 21-18 win over the Nittany Lions, finishing 5 of 7 for 47 yards passing, along with 36 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

Carr helped spark the comeback with efficient passing and key runs, including a 12-yard score that helped seal the win. Now, Michigan appears ready to turn to the freshman once again. According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Carr is expected to start against No. 6 Indiana on Saturday.

A former No. 1 overall recruit, the Wolverines offered him an NIL package worth around $12 million with the hope he could get them back in the national championship conversation. But his second season at Michigan has been about as bad as one could have imagined.

Through six games, Underwood has completed just 58.1% of his passes for 924 yards and five touchdowns with six interceptions, along with 223 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. His two interceptions against Penn State proved especially costly, and the Wolverines have been only narrowly scraping by with him under center, with Michigan currently sitting at 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play. His future with the program now depends on how he responds to having to take on a backup role. If Underwood can show head coach Kyle Whittingham and his staff that he can still be the elite quarterback they bet on him to be, he could get another chance later in the season. But he's on thin ice right now, and if Carr can keep Michigan in the win column, Underwood's time in Ann Arbor could very well be over.
