The number of people rushed to the hospital due to self-harm or attempted suicide grew for the seventh straight year to 43,631 in 2025, according to the government-affiliated Japan Suicide Countermeasures Promotion Center (JSCP). JSCP’s report, released Thursday to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day, looked at data from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency to determine the number of such cases. An average of 120 people per day were transported to the hospital for acts of self-harm, including bodily self-injury and attempted suicides, up from 116 in 2024.
