The Celebrity Traitors and Clarkson’s Farm emerged as the major winners at the National Television Awards, taking home the evening’s highest accolades. The inaugural celebrity spin-off of the hit BBC format was crowned best reality competition following a dramatic finale in which comedian Alan Carr was unmasked as a traitor. Accepting the trophy, his co-star Charlotte Church remarked: "I just want to say – that final, what a beautiful vignette of male tenderness and emotional expression.
"Alan, Nick (Mohammed) and David (Olusoga), you were just absolutely sublime, so kudos, brother." Carr was also surprised with the special recognition award, accompanied by a serenade from Amanda Holden, Paloma Faith, Kate Garraway, Church and Olusoga. Faith made her entrance on stage inside a black coffin, referencing her dramatic fictional murder at the hands of Carr during the series. In a filmed tribute, his fellow Traitors contestant Sir Stephen Fry noted: "Despite the wickedness, despite the cruelty of the man, it’s very hard not to love him." Presenter Claudia Winkleman added: "He’s delicious, isn’t he?
I’d like him on a cracker." On stage, Carr joked: "This is how thick I am, it was only when Paloma came out that I realised it’s me. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent. Clarkson’s Farm secured the reality docuseries award, beating competition from At Home With The Furys, Stacey & Joe and Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. Speaking backstage, Jeremy Clarkson described the win as a "thrill".
"The people who voted for us … I also think they kind of voted for farmers. I think they are going, ‘oh, that is a difficult job’." The Prime Video series previously won the factual entertainment series title at last year’s event. Earlier this year, Clarkson revealed during an episode of the show that he had been diagnosed with an "aggressive" form of prostate cancer, which was detected early.
He later confirmed that an April PSA test indicated no further signs of cancer and that he is in remission. "I had a heart thing and then a bit of cancer, but we are very lucky to live in a time when doctors can mend you very quickly and easily," he said backstage at the NTAs. "I was only also away two weeks, too (for treatment).
