The Los Angeles Chargers are the only winless team left in the NFL as they come off their bye week for their Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The person arguably under the most fire on the Chargers' coaching staff is offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Coach Jim Harbaugh still has trust and faith in McDaniel, though, as he's keeping the OC in charge of play calling.
McDaniel spoke to reporters on Thursday, and he understands why he's been getting so much flak. The team hasn't delivered a win, so of course the team's going to be under a critical microscope. Everyone has their rules, and somebody has to be responsible for the overall output.
And when you’re 0-6, quite frankly, all people interested in the Chargers really want the results to be different. I don’t have any other expectation, you know, just because of the obvious." McDaniel makes sure not to dwell on the negative comments headed his way. "So I really don’t have any—everything’s an opportunity cost.
If I’m spending time worried about things that I would assume would occur, that is an absolute waste of time. So, I try to stay out of that way.” McDaniel's job probably isn't fully safe until the Chargers start winning some games. He obviously hasn't delivered on the offensive front this season.
The Chargers rank 31st in total offensive yards (1,723), 28th in yards per gain (287.2), 30th in passing yards (1,009) and dead last in total points with 90. Keep in mind that the Chargers have only competed in six games, but regardless of that, it's embarrassing to be listed near or at the bottom in any of these offensive categories.
