Chiefs Face Concerning Injury as Top Breakout Candidate Leaves Practice on Cart

The Chiefs suffered a concerning injury scare as one of their top breakout candidates was forced to leave practice on a cart.

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to bounce back in 2026 with a healthy Patrick Mahomes, who is returning from the ACL injury he suffered late last season, along with future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy back in the fold. But one of the biggest questions surrounding the Chiefs is still the wide receiver room. Kansas City needs someone to emerge as Mahomes' top target, with Rashee Rice and former first-round pick Xavier Worthy among the leading candidates.

Tyquan Thornton was another name generating buzz as a potential breakout candidate. Unfortunately, the explosive wide receiver suffered an injury scare Tuesday, leaving practice early with a hamstring strain and eventually being carted to the locker room. Thornton initially spent time in the medical tent before being taken off the field, and the Chiefs had not provided a definitive timetable for his return.

A second-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2022, Thornton spent his first three seasons struggling to establish himself while dealing with injuries. New England waived him in November 2024, and the Chiefs claimed him shortly afterward.

The move to Kansas City gave Thornton a fresh opportunity, and he made the most of it last season. Thornton caught 19 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games, averaging an eye-popping 23.1 yards per reception. His ability to stretch the field immediately gave Mahomes another dangerous vertical threat, and his production suggested he could be in line for a larger role in 2026.

That opportunity is particularly important because Kansas City's receiver room still has plenty to prove. Rice and Worthy are expected to be central pieces of the offense, but both have dealt with injuries and other setbacks during their young careers. Thornton had been listed as a starting receiver on Kansas City's current depth chart, making his health an important part of the team's plans.

Now, the Chiefs will have to wait for more information.
