China’s economic transformation is creating an opportunity for agricultural exporters, including Azerbaijan. As household incomes rise, consumer spending expands, and food preferences evolve, demand increasingly creates room for a wider range of quality products, convenient food formats and premium choices. For Azerbaijan, the opportunity is to turn stronger purchasing power in China into sustained growth in agricultural and processed-food exports.

Official Chinese data show that nationwide per capita disposable income reached 43,377 yuan in 2025, an annual increase of 5% in both nominal and real terms. Urban residents recorded an average disposable income of 56,502 yuan, up 4.3%, while rural residents reached 24,456 yuan, up 5.8%. Nationwide per capita consumption expenditure climbed 4.4% to 29,476 yuan.

These figures show expanding purchasing power across the world’s second-largest economy. Rising incomes shape food markets in several ways. Consumers gain greater scope to explore different products, pay attention to quality and safety, and purchase more processed or conveniently packaged foods.

China’s market scale makes even modest changes in purchasing habits commercially meaningful for foreign suppliers. For Azerbaijan, the strategic task is to match this demand with reliable supply, consistent standards and distinctive products. Recent bilateral figures suggest that commercial links are gaining momentum.

According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Agriculture, trade in agricultural and processed food products between Azerbaijan and China reached $37.9 million in the first seven months of 2026. Imports from China increased by 25.5%, while Azerbaijan’s exports to China rose by 102.4% compared with the same period of 2025. The export growth rate is encouraging: it indicates that Azerbaijani products are gaining traction in the Chinese market.

The broader export picture also provides a useful foundation. In January–July 2026, Azerbaijan exported $673.4 million in agricultural products, a 22.1% annual increase. Agro-industrial exports reached $223.1 million, up 24.8%, bringing combined agricultural and agro-industrial exports to $896.4 million, an increase of 22.8%.
