A port city in New York on the shores of the renamed Lake Ontario—in the heart of a county which voted for Donald Trump in 2024—has rejected the president’s efforts to call the body of water “Lake America.” Following the breakdown in trade negotiations with Canada, Trump said the U.S. was “giving serious consideration” to the change because “we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.” Last week, the president signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming system. Polls show that most Americans disagree with changing the centuries-old name. And the county of Oswego in New York state—which Trump carried 62 percent to 38 percent in the presidential election—likewise appears to be opposed, with many of the city’s lawmakers and residents expressing similar frustration with the plan.
This week, Oswego Mayor Robert Corradino, a Republican, released a statement in which he said that the city’s government does not back Trump’s executive order, and sees no reason to alter the lake’s current name. The resolution noted the “longstanding historical and geographic significance” of the lake, as well as the “significant cost to taxpayers and businesses” that would be involved in renaming it.
