Government estimates put the immediate economic damage at $2.7 billion — equivalent to 6.7% of Nepal’s gross domestic product.

Physical damage accounted for $1.8 billion, with an additional $883 million in economic losses. Nepal has already sought compensation from the United Nations Fund for responding to Loss and Damage, a nascent climate-aid system set up to help developing nations deal with the worst impacts of global warming. The study’s confirmation of human-caused warming as a factor provides crucial scientific backing that is expected to embolden Nepal’s claim, experts say.

Heavy snowfall in late 2025 followed by extreme summer heat sent massive volumes of meltwater deep into mountain crevices that had been fractured by the 2015 earthquake. As permafrost thawed and trapped fluid, the mountain face lost its structural integrity until a massive slab of rock and ice broke free. The vulnerability extends far beyond Nepal.

Across the Himalayas — home to the world’s largest store of frozen water outside the polar regions — the elevation at which the ground stays permanently frozen has been climbing by roughly 100 meters per decade, according to the study. Scientists warn that as thawing shifts higher into once-stable peaks, destabilized rock faces and volatile meltwater will pose an escalating threat to downstream communities.
