According to Triple-A Iowa broadcaster Jason Kempf, the Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Austin Wynns. In addition, Kempf shared that Wynns has joined Triple-A Iowa's roster. Wynns signing with the Cubs comes after he was designated for assignment and then released by the Texas Rangers last week.
Now, he has found a new home with the Cubs and will be looking to impress with Triple-A Iowa in hopes of landing a call-up before the season is over. Wynns has appeared in 28 MLB games this season split between the Athletics, Atlanta Braves, and Rangers, where he has recorded one home run, one RBI, and a .162 batting average. This is after he posted six home runs, 21 RBI, and a .291 batting average in 40 games last season split between the Cincinnati Reds and Athletics.
Overall, there is no real harm in the Cubs taking a chance on Wynns with this minor league deal. He will now provide Chicago with another catcher who has MLB experience, which is never a bad thing. In 312 career MLB games over eight seasons split between the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Reds, A's, Braves, and Rangers, Wynns has posted 20 home runs, 85 RBI, and a .230 batting average.
