The Washington Commanders produced one of the worst clock management moments in recent NFL history on Sunday during their 27-27 overtime tie with the New York Giants. The Commanders were set up for a game-winning field goal with eight seconds left in overtime, but because the team had used all its timeouts, they couldn't stop the clock after quarterback Jayden Daniels was tackled for no gain. It was overall the wrong play to call.
Daniels took the blame after the game: "We have to stop the clock. We have to know the situation. We have to relay that as an offense.
It starts with everyone, top down. Ultimately, it's on me." However, NFL fans quickly claimed it was Washington coach Dan Quinn's fault for the mishandling of clock management. There was a question if Quinn would even have a job come Monday just because of the harsh criticism he's endured from fans and even from within ownership (minority owner Magic Johnson was not happy).
When speaking with reporters on Monday, Quinn acknowledged that the team has "a lot of [expletive] to clean up" from the loss. And [I’m] pissed about it," Quinn said on Monday. And when I told the team, and with the coach— like, it was a breakdown.
"And our time today as a team was spent on the how and the why and make sure that it never does again. So, yesterday’s ending was the biggest example, but we’ve got a lot of [expletive] to clean up on from yesterday’s game, and trust me, everyone in this building started with me feels that urgency." Quinn's definitely on the hot seat after the loss, so he senses the "urgency" to improve the team's strategies. If things don't get better soon, there's a really good chance the Commanders job will be up for grabs in the offseason.
Quinn could even be fired mid-season at this rate, that's just how embarrassing the clock management flub was on Sunday. Washington will next face the San Francisco 49ers in primetime on Monday night. This will give the Commanders the opportunity to wipe fans' minds somewhat fresh of the mishap they witnessed on Sunday afternoon, if they can pull out a win over an undefeated team.
