General Motors Company (GM) is one of the world's largest automakers, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, with a storied history dating back to 1908. The company designs, manufactures, and sells a diverse lineup of trucks, SUVs, crossovers, and passenger vehicles under iconic brands including Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick. Under CEO Mary Barra, GM has been executing a disciplined turnaround strategy centered on pricing power in full-size trucks and SUVs, expanding high-margin software and OnStar Digital subscription revenue, and navigating the industry's electric vehicle transition.

GM Financial and international joint ventures, including operations in China, further diversify the company's global automotive footprint. GM stock has been one of 2026's standout automotive performers, recently trading around $87.07 and hovering near its 52-week high of $91.85, after touching an all-time closing high of $90.30 in late July. Shares have surged more than 60% over the past year, fueled by strong pricing discipline, aggressive share buybacks, and back-to-back earnings beats.

GM stock briefly pulled back after news that Samsung SDI is taking full ownership of a jointly planned Indiana battery plant amid slower-than-expected EV demand, though the broader rally has remained intact as investors reward GM's improving margins and raised full-year guidance. By contrast, the S&P 500 Consumer Discretionary sector ($SRCD) index has been roughly flat in 2026, up just about 1% year-to-date (YTD). GM's stock has dramatically outperformed its own sector, underscoring investor confidence in the automaker's pricing power, software-driven revenue growth, and disciplined execution amid a mixed consumer spending backdrop. General Motors reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $48.0 billion, up 1.9% year-over-year (YoY) and comfortably ahead of the $47.01 billion analyst consensus.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $3.57, topping Wall Street's $3.29 estimate by 8.5% and marking GM's fourth consecutive quarterly beat. GAAP diluted EPS, however, fell 26% YoY to $1.41, reflecting one-time charges tied to EV strategic realignment and China restructuring that weighed on reported profitability. Net income attributable to stockholders declined 31.1% to $1.3 billion, while adjusted EBIT surged 29.8% to $3.94 billion, lifting the adjusted EBIT margin to 8.2% from 6.4% a year earlier.

GM North America delivered a standout 42.7% jump in adjusted EBIT to $3.4 billion, driven by robust demand for full-size trucks and SUVs, while adjusted automotive free cash flow more than doubled to $5 billion. First-half 2026 adjusted diluted EPS reached $7.27, up more than 35% YoY, marking GM's best-ever first-half performance. Management raised full-year 2026 EBIT-adjusted guidance for the second time this year, to a range of $14 billion to $16 billion, alongside adjusted EPS guidance of $12 to $14, up from prior levels.
