Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson landed in the concussion protocol on Wednesday, setting up the opportunity for backup Shedeur Sanders to start on Sunday versus the New Orleans Saints. Browns coach Todd Monken confirmed on Friday that Sanders will start this weekend. However, Watson still hasn't been ruled out for the contest, and there's actually still a chance for him to play on Sunday in the backup position.
Watson was cleared to return to practice on Friday, although he hasn't cleared concussion protocol yet. This is a step in the right direction for him being cleared to play on Sunday, as long as there's no setbacks. Saturday will be telling for the Browns as Watson will need to be cleared in order to have a chance to play the following day.
Monken did say earlier in the week that even if Watson is available to return towards the end of the week, it doesn't mean he'll get the start, via the Akron Beacon Journal. They don't want to rush him back from a concussion. Sanders will get his first start of the season.
Sanders started in seven games last season during his rookie campaign, leading the Browns to a 3-4 record. His performances led him to earning a Pro Bowl bid. Sanders is ready to take on the task on Sunday.
He told reporters on Wednesday that he prepared in the offseason to improve in different areas. He's been ready for the opportunity all season even as Watson's started in all eight games. Watson's completed 65.5% of his passes for 1,806 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
