Donald Trump Praises Attendance at Texas Rally: What Videos Show

Trump said "there's never been anything like it," but what does footage show about San Antonio rally attendance?

There’s never been anything like it," President Donald Trump declared to the crowd on Wednesday night in San Antonio’s Freeman Coliseum. The president’s appearance at the Texas rally marked his public support for Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton as he fights against opponent James Talarico. "Pretend that I’m on the ballot," he told Texans, while touting his proposed $5,000 "Trump dividend." But it was the crowd that stole the show—from repeated interruptions and the removal of protesters to Trump’s own digression where he praised the high turnout.

Large rally crowds do not necessarily translate into electoral victories because enthusiasm and turnout at rallies can be unrepresentative of the broader electorate. In Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Senate campaign, he routinely drew enormous crowds—including an estimated 55,000 people at an Austin rally—yet ultimately lost to Republican Ted Cruz by about 2.6 percentage points. As Trump claimed they had filled the arena, what do the videos and photos from the night show?

Depending on the event setup, Freeman Coliseum can hold a varying number of attendees. Rodeos and motor sports events can sell 9,500 tickets, while concerts and political rallies are usually closer to 11,700. As people arrived for the event on Wednesday night, it was clear that many people had marked it in their calendar—though not all for the right reasons.

Protesters gathered outside the arena before the rally was due to start, with signs calling for "no more detention centers" and "San Antonio fights back." But, inside, the turnout appeared to be a success. They can see these images and this is a full rally," CNN’s Erin Burnett said while looking at live images of the rally on air. Similarly, The described the event as a "packed Freeman Coliseum," and local reports described large crowds, long lines and supporters arriving hours before the event.

"The fake news will take a picture of two empty seats, and they’ll say Trump did not fill [the arena] up," Trump said on stage, just as the C-SPAN camera panned to show the audience there were a number of empty seats at the top of the arena. Even with a great turnout, it may not translate into the result the Republicans are looking for as political scientists have long cautioned against treating rally crowd size as a proxy for electoral strength. A 2026 paper in Research & Politics found that the effects of presidential campaign rallies were generally short-lived and faded within about a week, having smaller impacts on overall voter choice.

Newsweek reached out to the White House and Freeman Coliseum via email for comment and is awaiting responses. Declared as a sell-out, Trump’s San Antonio rally did boast an impressive turnout, but empty seats could be seen in some footage. As well as a handful of empty seats, there were also a number of attendees who had not turned out to support Trump—in fact, it was quite the opposite.
