Things looked bleak for the Seattle Seahawks in the third quarter when the New England Patriots led 10-0. The Seahawks lost starting quarterback Sam Darnold after the first drive of the night due to a hip injury. Backup quarterback Drew Lock looked out of sync in his first four drives, which all ended in punts.
On the Seahawks' final possession of the third quarter, Lock led Seattle on a 31-yard drive that ended in a field goal to put the Seahawks on the board. Lock had more heroics in the fourth quarter, connecting with receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Lock led the Seahawks down the field for another field goal to take a 13-10 lead with 5:50 remaining in the game.
A third interception by Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Seattle. "I know what kind of defense we have," Lock said.
"I know the playmakers that we have on this side of the ball, on the opposite side of the ball. If I take care of the football, get it in their hands, don't turn it over, win the turnover battle, by the end of the game, I'd like to think we'd have a pretty good shot at winning. Sure enough, 13-10." Lock finished the night going 16 of 22 passing for 187 yards and one touchdown.
He added another 13 yards on the ground. He committed no turnovers, which was a key reason Seattle escaped with a comeback victory with a backup quarterback. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters after the game that a fracture was ruled out for Darnold, a good sign that the quarterback won't have to miss a long stretch of time, though there are more tests to be done.
