Tokyo police have arrested two men for allegedly robbing a Tokyo watch shop of four luxury watches worth about ¥200 million ($1.25 million) in broad daylight earlier this week. The Metropolitan Police Department arrested Pina Guzman Jeremy Paolo, 23, and Manzano Quezada Boris Alexis, 33, on Thursday. The duo, who are Chilean nationals, have largely admitted to the allegations against them.
Manzano told investigators that he was hoping to sell the watches and go back to his home country with the money. When they were arrested, Pina had a watch believed to be one of the stolen ones, along with another, police said. Manzano told investigators he lost the other watches he took while on the run.
According to investigators, the two allegedly smashed the showcase at the watch shop, locaed in a shopping complex in Tokyo’s Nakano Ward, on Tuesday and made off with three Richard Mille watches and a Patek Philippe timepiece. Security footage showed one of the suspects running away on foot while the other fled on an electric scooter. The two then met up at a location 400 meters from the store and boarded a train.
The suspects were arrested after police found them in a minpaku facility, a type of private lodging service, in the city of Osaka. They arrived at Haneda Airport from Australia on Aug. 21, and appeared to have gone to the watch shop on Sunday. Police are investigating why they targeted the store and whether they had other accomplices.
