The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, according to a report from NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo. This move leaves Tanner McKee and Cole Payton as the two quarterback options behind starting signal caller Jalen Hurts. While Dalton is no longer on the active roster, that doesn't necessarily mean his time with the Eagles is over.
"This doesn’t close the door on Andy Dalton’s tenure with the #Eagles. They have a lot of injuries and needed his spot. Could still return, even via a practice-squad spot, a source informed says," Garafolo reported.
This decision comes a couple weeks after Dalton made his lone appearance for the Eagles. With Hurts in the blue medical tent being evaluated for a concussion, the 38-year-old QB stepped in for a few plays near the goal line. On 3rd-and-goal from the two-yard line, Dalton threw a costly end-zone interception.
The Eagles would go on to lose to the Chicago Bears with a 27-7 final score. McKee took over as the Eagles' No. 2 quarterback following Dalton's mistake. Meanwhile, Payton joined the team this past offseason as a fifth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia franchise.
The 2-2 Eagles will look to get their season back on track in an international Week 5 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Sunday.
