New film is a direct sequel to the award-winning 2023 hit ‘Godzilla Minus One’

After months of teasing, the first theatrical trailer, alongside an all-new poster, for Godzilla Minus Zero has finally been unveiled, hinting at the addition of a classic Godzilla foe. The new trailer and additional promotional artwork feature Godzilla at its centre, enveloped in a mysterious blue energy while vivid gold light beams strike down from above. Opening with confirmation that Godzilla was not entirely destroyed after the events of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, the trailer offers a glimpse into the latest kaiju extermination operation as the legendary monster returns to terrorise post-war Japan all over again.

However, it appears this time, Godzilla is not alone. Towards the end of the trailer, the character Kenji Noda, played by Hidetaka Yoshioka, says: “Don’t worry, this isn’t Godzilla we’re talking about.” The trailer then cuts to the sound of a distinctive roar and a scene of Godzilla falling from the sky, landing on the ruins of a city with a thud. Long-time fans have excitedly taken to social media in the belief that the other monster in the film is King Ghidorah, an enemy of Godzilla dating back to 1964.

King Ghidorah is a three-headed golden dragon who can blast lightning-like attacks from its mouths. The monster's origin stories can vary from extraterrestrial, a man-made cyborg from the future or a god from another dimension. Select scenes in the preview also showcase the film’s epic IMAX sequences.

Billed as the first Japanese production film for IMAX, Godzilla Minus Zero was captured using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, with audio and visuals uniquely optimised for IMAX screens. The ensemble cast expands with Jun Kunimura playing the role of Dr Ogata, alongside Kou Maehara as Akira Hagiwara, assistant to Professor Murakami, played by Min Tanaka. Masami Nagasawa joins the cast as Makoto Aoyama, a genius weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau.

Kisuke Iida is set to reprise his role as Akio Itagaki, the Toyo Balloon section chief who provided vital help during the extermination operation in Godzilla Minus One. Further cast additions include Kenji Mizuhashi, Eita Okuno, and Kai Inowaki. New subscribers only. £9.99/mo. after free trial.

Godzilla Minus Zero launches in cinemas on November 6, 2026, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki returning as director, screenwriter, and VFX lead. 2023’s Godzilla Minus One proved to be a critical and financial success, resulting in the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Oscars.
