Newsweek spoke to former USC QB Matt Leinart about the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff.

The College Football Playoff will likely expand to 24 teams next year, and Matt Leinart is ready for it. In an interview with Newsweek, Leinart shared his thoughts on the playoff field potentially having 24 teams instead of 12. The former USC quarterback believes that the expansion would make the regular season more important.

"I think we'll see teams schedule harder non-conference games," Leinart told Newsweek. "I think we need more of that because a lot of these non-conference games have been terrible. You're not going to get penalized for losing a big game." "...I just think there's more teams at the end of the season vying for a playoff spot, because you're going to have three, four-loss teams trying to get in and trying to win every game," Leinart added.

"Look, I think, is it watered down? Are there 24 teams that can win a national championship? But also, the ability to have more games at home in December in snow- it's NFL, right?

"It's the same thing we see in the NFL. It's just more opportunity regionally for people to be invested, players to play. I think there's so many positives to it." The deal is not done, but ESPN's Pete Thamel and Heather Dinich reported in October that it will come together in the near future.

Once the expansion is finalized, the field will have the Power 4 conference champions, the highest-ranking Group of 6 team, and 19 at-large bids. The College Football Playoff was launched in 2014 with four teams. The four-team format lasted 10 seasons before it was expanded to 12 in 2024.

In the College Football Playoff, Alabama has the most national titles, with three. Clemson, Ohio State, and Georgia have won two national championships, and the teams that have won one national title in the CFP are Michigan, Indiana, and LSU.
