After several weeks away to help Team USA claim gold in the FIBA World Cup, Caitlin Clark returned to action with the Indiana Fever on Friday night and was back to breaking records. Clark and the Fever took on the expansion team, the Toronto Tempo, and won 103-85 to keep pace with the Atlanta Dream as they chase the Las Vegas Aces for the third-best record. Along the way, Clark tallied another double-double, tying her own record for most double-doubles by a guard in a single season.
The Clark report X account reported she also made history with 28 points, 14 assists, and six rebounds in Indiana's win over Toronto, since no other player has ever recorded that specific stat line. This is just Clark's third season in the league, and the historic and record-setting performances keep happening as she remains in the conversation for WNBA Most Valuable Player. On Friday night, Mitchell put together a stat line of 33 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the win. Last month, Clark became the first player to record 200-plus points and 100-plus assists in a calendar month. She finished August with 268 points and 103 assists.
She also took over the record for the most career games with 30-plus points and 10-plus assists last month, recording her fifth such game. In only Clark's third season, she seems on a serious trajectory to become one of the greatest, if not the all-time greatest, player in the history of the WNBA. However, there are always new stars emerging.
They include the Dallas Wings' Paige Bueckers and this year's favorite for Rookie of the Year, Olivia Miles of the Minnesota Lynx. Miles isn't just a favorite for WNBA ROY, but is also considered a contender for the MVP award, right behind the favorite to win, reigning MVP A'ja Wilson from the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces. The Fever have three games left, and Clark has serious potential to break her own record for the most double-doubles by a guard in a single season.
Indiana hosts the Washington Mystics on Sunday, Sept. 20, followed by the Lynx on Tuesday, Sept. 22. They'll wrap up their regular-season schedule with a visit to Minnesota to face the Lynx on Thursday, Sept. 24.
