Noles fans exiting Doak Campbell Stadium on Monday chanted for Florida State to fire head coach Mike Norvell after the Seminoles lost 27-24 to SMU in Week 1. One of the complications Florida State faces to firing Norvell is his hefty buyout, which would cost nearly $50 million. It would cost FSU approximately $100 million for Norvell's buyout and to hire a new coaching staff and rebuild the roster.
Another complication was what to do with FSU athletic director Michael Alford. If Florida State wanted to go in another direction at head coach, the Noles might be better served with a new athletic director. Florida State president Richard McCullough appointed Bruce Warwick to serve as the interim athletic director while the school conducts a national search to find a permanent athletic director. Florida State intends to be more competitive in football in the future. "Changes like this are never easy, but sometimes necessary," Peter Collins, Florida State board of trustees chairman, said in the release.
"We have made significant investments and structural changes in our athletics program and Seminole Boosters over the past few years, but more are needed. "This step begins the next phase of restructuring that the university must commit to in order to compete in this era of college sports. The President and the Board are in lockstep on the mission and what the results must be." The change at athletic director appears to signal that more changes are coming to the football program in the near future.
Norvell is currently getting the Noles prepared to play the No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide on the road on Saturday. Norvell is 39-35 overall and 22-27 in ACC play during his time at Florida State. He went 13-1 with FSU in 2023, but has won just eight games since.
