Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones has celebrated her 60th birthday at a social club with co-stars including James Corden and Rob Brydon. The party took place at the Porthcawl and Kenfig Hill RAFA (Royal Air Force Association) Club on Saturday where her parents were members for several years. Corden, who co-wrote the series and played Smithy - the love interest of Jones' Nessa - helped behind the bar pouring beers, while Jones reconnected with Brydon to sing country classic Islands in the Stream on stage.
Sarah Prescott, the club's steward, described the evening as "overwhelming and unbelievable", thanking Jones for choosing the club to host the event. The private celebration was also attended by cast members Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman, as well as Steve Speirs, a close collaborator of Jones'. "We didn't realise how big of an event it was until the actual night when they were all coming through the door," Prescott said.
"It was quite overwhelming and unbelievable," she said, adding it had been kept private and required careful planning. Prescott said Jones chose the venue because of its strong connection to her family, with both her parents long-standing members. "She used to come here as a child and had her first guitar lesson at the RAFA club, so she does hold the club dearly," she said.
The evening also saw Jones and Corden reunited for a rendition of Islands In the Stream, a duet they did on the show, while Corden performed Me and Mrs Jones by Billy Paul. "They were all so lovely and just like normal people really," Prescott said. "She had everything she wanted.
She even wanted curry and chips." Prescott also said staff had reported an increase in new booking enquiries since the event. "I think it's definitely put the RAFA back on the map," she said. She also received a message from Jones' team saying the actress was "utterly delighted" and the party was "better than she could have ever imagined".
