Georgia didn't need a flashy portal QB upgrade -- the Bulldogs already had Gunner Stockton at home

The Bulldogs have stuck with Stockton for two summers and he's proved that to be a wise decision

Georgia travels to Tuscaloosa on Saturday for a top-10 showdown with Alabama. It will be a battle between two of the SEC's best, with the winner all but punching their ticket to the College Football Playoff. It will also be a showdown between two teams that opted against taking a spin around the transfer portal this summer in search of a quarterback upgrade and have been rewarded thus far for their patience and loyalty.

Alabama's Keelon Russell is the talk of the college football world due to the eye-popping production of the Crimson Tide offense under the lead of their sophomore star. Russell is the kind of dynamic playmaker who makes it easy to get excited with jaw-dropping athleticism and arm talent, creating highlight-reel plays with regularity for an offense that piles up points. However, it's Georgia's offense, led by senior Gunner Stockton, that ranks first in scoring at 51.4 points per game.

Stockton is rarely talked about as one of the top quarterbacks in college football -- largely because he doesn't have the physical profile of a future NFL quarterback -- but through five games, there are few QBs in the country playing better than the Georgia senior. After a strong junior season, Stockton has shown another level of growth this season. He's completing 75.5% of his passes for 1,049 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one interception this season, adding 122 yards rushing on 20 carries.

His completion percentage leads the nation, and that allows the Georgia offense to operate with ruthless efficiency. "I think Gunner Stockton is playing as highly efficient as I've seen from a quarterback," Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said this week. "You can just see he's very comfortable, he's very decisive ... he presents a significant challenge because he's so dialed into what they're doing and has great answers based off of what a defense shows." That efficiency is the byproduct of his continued development as a passer, tightening his throwing motion over his career to take advantage of what's been his most elite trait: his processing.

In his first action as a sophomore, Stockton had a long windup before throwing the ball, but he has gotten considerably more efficient with his mechanics. That's allowed him to make quick decisions and get the ball to receivers in open windows, which has aided his leap in efficiency as a passer this season, making the Georgia offense lethal through five weeks. What's been most notable about Stockton's performance thus far is that he's coupled efficiency with more explosiveness, as his yards per attempt have jumped from 7.5 in 2025 to 10.3 so far in 2026.

That evolution into a more willing and capable downfield passer gives the Georgia offense, which still operates with a run-first approach, another layer for opposing defenses to worry about that wasn't present last year. In the entire 2025 season, Georgia completed 17 passes of 30-plus yards and just four of 40-plus -- ranking 123rd in the country. In the first five games of 2026, they've completed 11 passes of 30-plus yards, including seven over 40, which is tied for the third-most in the nation.
