The New York Giants may seek quarterback reinforcements after losing Jaxson Dart to a season-ending knee injury. An NFL insider linked them to an intriguing veteran with considerable playoff experience. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo expects the Giants to discuss Jimmy Garoppolo as a potential free-agent addition.
Garafolo believes the Giants are one of few teams that may pique the 34-year-old's interest. Garoppolo spent the last two seasons as Matthew Stafford's understudy on the Los Angeles Rams. The former second-round pick made his only start to close the 2024 campaign, tallying 334 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a pick in a 30-25 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
After beginning his career as Tom Brady's backup, Garoppolo landed a headliner role on the San Francisco 49ers. He led them to the Super Bowl in 2019 and lost a tight NFC Championship Game to the Rams two years later. Over his 12-year career, Garoppolo has completed 67.4% of his passes for 15,828 yards, 96 touchdowns, and a 97.6 quarterback rating.
He's averaged 8.2 yards per attempt, making Garoppolo one of the better available quarterbacks. With Dart out, the Giants will hand their offense to Jameis Winston. The former No. 1 pick struggled in Monday night's loss to the Rams, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.
Even if they keep him as the starter, the Giants are lacking depth behind Winston. Jake Haener, who hasn't played in an NFL game since 2024, will serve as the second-stringer in Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday that "all options are open" to acquire more quarterback help.
