The New York Giants are expected to add a quarterback, or maybe even two, after Jaxson Dart underwent knee surgery on Friday that will end his ability to play in the regular season. On Sunday, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston got the start for the Giants, leading the team to a 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans in wet and rainy conditions at MetLife Stadium. Winston went 14 of 22 passing for 118 yards.
He added another 14 yards on the ground. Winston didn't play especially great, but it was enough for New York to beat a Titans squad that fell to 0-3 in Robert Saleh's first season as head coach. Per Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Harbaugh said Winston did what the Giants "required" to beat Tennessee on Sunday. While Winston, 32, hasn't lit up the stat sheet in passing yards or with passing touchdowns, the Giants aren't making plans revolve around the struggles of the former No. 1 pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. "Not at all," Harbaugh said.
"The plans are the plans. The opportunities that you have are the opportunities you have. No matter what, we're going to do everything we can to make our team as strong as we can based on what options we have." The Giants are hopeful Dart could return sometime in January if the team makes a deep playoff push.
In the meantime, New York needs to win games to make the postseason. The Giants are 2-1 and will host the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. Winston's play so far is concerning for the Giants' hopes to make the postseason.
He went 11 of 27 for 111 yards and one interception in the Giants' loss to the Los Angeles Rams on "Monday Night Football" in Week 2. New York believed Winston would play better with a plan designed for him against the Titans. The results appear to indicate that wasn't the case.
