The New York Giants lost wide receiver Calvin Austin III to a "serious knee injury" during Tuesday's training camp practice, according to multiple reports. Austin went down during a 1-on-1 drill, immediately grabbing at his right knee. The recent free-agent signing was carted off the field and consoled by team owner John Mara, according to team insider Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
Austin signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Giants earlier this offseason. The former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver was expected to take the field as the Giants WR3 behind Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton this coming NFL season. In his third and final season with the Steelers in 2025, Austin reeled in 31 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns.
The year prior, he had 36 catches for 548 yards and four scores. Fortunately for the Giants, Nabers shed his red no-contact jersey for Monday's practice. As he continues to recover from the season-ending ACL tear he suffered last year, it appears the Giants' No. 1 WR is trending in the right direction to take for field for his team's Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 13.
