Last night, SNL was hosted by Obsession star Inde Navarrette, with musical guest Gracie Abrams. Surprise guest Tom Hanks also returned in the cold open, alongside cast member Mikey Day and former cast member Bobby Moynihan, to reprise his role as David S. Pumpkins, which premiered on the show’s Halloween episode 10 (!) years ago.
The opening turned into one of the recurring Trump freeze-frame sketches, with the president (James Austin Johnson) talking about his “gay dementia.” Saidah Belo-Osagie played Nicki Minaj, and Veronika Slowikowska played Trump’s short-term former press secretary Katie Zacharia. It was Abrams’ second time as musical guest, and she performed the songs “Hit The Wall” and “Here You Come, There You Go,” which is out now as part of the newly announced deluxe version of Daughter From Hell, featuring five additional songs. Last night’s performance was the live debut.
For the first song, she dressed as Juliet, and for the next one, as Romeo, from Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. She paid tribute to the scene where they meet through the glass of a fish tank. In her monologue, Navarrette referenced previous host Shane Gillis’ widely criticized “whore” joke from his monologue.
It wasn’t as skewering as SNL UK’s reaction, but it’s good that we’re still not letting it go. Later, Slowikowska reappeared to play Kelly Clarkson opposite Grace Reiter’s bird automaton. Moynihan also brought back his old Drunk Uncle character during a Weekend Update segment about the World Series.
Then Milwaukee Brewers players Christian Yelich and Brice Turang, along with manager Pat Murphy, joined with their trophy. Also over the weekend, SNL UK uploaded its pre-taped Cher Witch Project from last week’s episode, which was hosted by Cynthia Erivo.
