'GTA 6' at Risk as PS5 Hackers Officially Claim Major New Breakthrough

Fans are hoping Grand Theft Auto 6 will be playable on PC soon, but PS5 jailbreak hackers still face hurdles placed by Sony and Rockstar

2026 has been a year of tremendous progress for the PlayStation 5 jailbreaking scene, which can now free consoles from the PS5 ecosystem without a convoluted workaround. As footage of unofficial ports and pirated games proliferates, onlookers primarily have one question: What does the PS5 jailbreak situation mean for Grand Theft Auto 6? At first, the answer was nothing — but now, that's starting to change.

Up until recently, jailbreaking a PS5 relied on vulnerabilities present in firmware versions that affected all of Sony's major releases this year, from Marvel's Wolverine to Saros. Though such major games were suddenly playable without purchase, the firmware limitation kept GTA 6 out of the jailbreaking scene's crosshairs. By the time Rockstar Games' open-world shooter launches in November, systems could be running an even fresher update.

Sony is already being proactive about it by asking users to update their consoles before they can even access the PlayStation Network. The game of cat and mouse is heating up, though. According to hackers, playing GTA 6 will require users to run PlayStation 5's firmware 14.10.

As of Oct. 20, the developers working on PS5 jailbreak methods have officially managed to access the PS5's debug menu while running that very same firmware, which implies they have kernel-level access. Such a kernel exploit theoretically provides the highest level of control over the system. GTA 6 is still weeks away from release, and Sony and Rockstar could change the firmware requirements to play the game.

The developer behind the latest breakthrough, Gezine, is also keeping the latest PS5 exploit private. Perhaps the biggest hurdle is that hackers have no known way to dump the game files needed to emulate or otherwise access GTA 6. Some assume this hurdle is insurmountable: The most popular dumping method, Hypervisor, was disabled by Sony after a hacker reported its existence in exchange for a $50,000 bounty.

At the same time, the recent surge in progress within the jailbreaking scene has been partially fueled by advances in AI code-generation tools — and AI is only getting better over time. Right now, there's a segment of gamers who are still angry at Sony for its decision to discontinue physical game support in 2028, which has some overlap with the GTA 6 fandom who are fuming over the game's lack of a physical disc release. The motivation to target GTA 6, which is widely regarded as the herald of an age of no physical ownership, is there.
