"Circadian Heart," the Vermont-based singer-songwriter Hannah Frances' new single, pulls off a neat trick. It starts off as a playfully oblique folk song with supremely relaxed and assured vocal. As the song builds, more elements come in — impressionistic strings, jazz-influenced horns — and the song seems like it's ready to whirl off into the unknown.
Instead, it keeps drawing itself back in, then expanding outward again. The song's structure is built on its own rhythm. Last year, Hannah Frances released her album Nested In Tangles, and we were into it.
Earlier this year, she collaborated with Mary Lattimore on "Beholden To The Birds Murmuring Above." At least for now, "Circadian Heart" is its own standalone single. In a press release, Frances says, "'Circadian Heart' is a look into the relational pattern of choosing unavailable people and trying to get them to choose me back, only to find that I have to stop chasing and learn to choose me in the end. How we’ll break our own hearts to feel familiar pain, until we choose a new way that is softer and more reciprocal." Frances and director Derrick Alexander shot the "Circadian Heart" video in Illinois' Waterfall Glen State Park, and it's got a lot of lovely shots of Frances by a forest stream.
Frances edited it herself. Check it out below, along with Frances' tour dates. TOUR DATES:10/24 - Brighton, UK @ Mutations Festival10/26 - London, UK @ Oslo Hackney10/27 - Barcelona, Spain @ Antigua Fabrica Estrella Damm10/29 - Guimares, Portugal @ Mucho Flow Festival
