Heat Get Sobering Prediction Despite Giannis Antetokounmpo Blockbuster

Despite pairing Giannis Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo, the Heat face a sobering prediction ahead of the new NBA season.

The Miami Heat swung big this offseason and landed Giannis Antetokounmpo. The team had been chasing the two-time MVP multiple times over the last five years, but Milwaukee repeatedly held on to try to chase another NBA title. But once it became clear their championship window was closing, they sent their franchise icon to South Beach.

Miami and Boston emerged as the two finalists, with the Celtics reportedly offering Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks. But the Bucks chose the Heat's younger package and larger draft haul. The deal sent Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, the 2026 No. 13 pick, future first-round picks, a 2030 swap, and a second-round pick.

Yet, according to The Athletic's John Hollinger, the Heat still might not have enough to even secure a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference this season. "I don’t think the rest of the roster beyond Giannis and Bam Adebayo is anywhere near good enough, and those easy wins in the East will be much harder to come by this season," Hollinger wrote, predicting Miami to finish 9th in the East. The reigning champion Knicks still have Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart, giving them a proven core to defend their title. Philadelphia made even bigger splashes, trading Paul George for Jaylen Brown before signing LeBron James, pairing them with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe, giving the Sixers arguably the best starting five in the NBA, provided everybody stays healthy. Boston, meanwhile, now has George next to a healthy Jayson Tatum, while Toronto brought back Kawhi Leonard to pair with Scottie Barnes.

Indiana will get back a healthy Tyrese Haliburton, and the Pistons just won 60 games with largely the same core that will be returning this season. The Cavs are also running it back with the same group that got them to the Eastern Conference Finals, plus Peyton Watson. The Wizards improved over the offseason as well.

Miami may have landed the biggest individual star on the market, but the East is as competitive as it's been in years, and the Heat's roster still has some questions.
