Residents of the Ogasawara Islands should expect high waves accompanied by persistent swells, as well as strong winds and temporarily heavy rain, when Typhoon In-fa makes its closest approach on Thursday, Weathernews warned on Wednesday. Although the typhoon, which the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) classified as strong, is unlikely to approach Japan’s main Honshu island, rain could also intensify in areas from the Kanto region to around Shizuoka Prefecture on Thursday due to moist air surrounding the storm, the weather information company added. The 31st named storm of the year, the typhoon was seen moving slowly north-northwest over waters southwest of the Ogasawara Islands on Wednesday morning, according to the JMA.
It is expected to continue moving north over waters west of the islands through Thursday before turning eastward. It is then forecast to move northeast over waters east of Japan on Friday. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals, packing winds of up to 126 kph near its center and gusts peaking at 180 kph.
