A new round of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports is now in effect, threatening to raise costs on products ranging from hockey sticks and honey to clothing, furniture and cameras. The 50 percent levies — which apply to about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods — took effect Saturday after last-minute negotiations between Washington and Ottawa fell apart. The breakdown marked another sharp escalation in a trade fight between two countries whose economies have long been deeply intertwined.
Both governments have blamed the other for the failure of the talks. Canadian Prime Minister Carney responded in blunt terms on Saturday, equating the tariffs to an attack on Canada. He said his government will impose retaliatory duties on American products beginning on September 8, which will match U.S. measures “dollar for dollar.” The immediate cost of Trump’s new tariffs will fall on American importers — the companies that buy Canadian goods and bring them into the U.S.
Those businesses can either seek out new suppliers, absorb the increase or pass the price hike on to consumers. A January study concluded that “nearly all” of Trump’s tariffs were paid for by U.S. consumers. The following month, a survey from the Pew Research Center found that 60 percent of Americans are opposed to the president’s substantial tariff increases.
The list of goods subject to the 50 percent tariff — imposed under the Tariff Act of 1930 — is long, reaching into industries from home construction and decor to fashion, food and recreation. Building and household materials feature prominently. The tariffs cover cement, plywood and particle board, along with vinyl tile floor coverings and furniture components such as handles and knobs.
Printing ink, perfumes and feathers used for stuffing are also included, potentially affecting everything from publishing to packaging. The measures also extend to clothing and accessories, including sweaters, gloves and overcoats, as well as gold necklaces and other precious metals. Dog owners could also feel the effects, with leashes, collars and muzzles among the products facing the new duties.
Several food and agricultural goods are also caught up in the levies. They include natural honey, wine, tulip and lily bulbs, and onion and beet seeds — a range that could affect grocery shelves and garden centers. Other targeted imports include hockey sticks, musical instrument cases and cameras, underscoring the breadth of the administration’s approach.
