The Carolina Hurricanes have announced some big news regarding captain Jordan Staal before the start of their training camp. The Hurricanes have announced that they have signed Staal to a one-year contract extension for the 2027-28 season. Carolina also shared that Staal will have a $900,000 base salary and receive a $4 million signing bonus with his extension.
Staal can also earn up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses as part of his extension. Seeing the Hurricanes work quickly to sign Staal to a contract extension is not difficult to understand. The 38-year-old forward is the heart of their team and is still a very effective NHL player.
He also played a huge role in bringing the Stanley Cup back to North Carolina this past spring, as evidenced by his Conn Smythe Trophy win. Staal appeared in 75 games last season for the Hurricanes, where he posted 20 goals, 36 points, 166 hits, and a plus-5 rating. He also posted eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games for the Hurricanes during their Stanley Cup championship run.
This included him scoring six goals and adding an assist in the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. Staal has posted 198 goals, 301 assists, 499 points, and a plus-14 rating in 972 games over 14 seasons with the Hurricanes.
