David Gonzalez, 32, was arrested after allegedly attacking a man and his daughter while off-duty in California, police said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was arrested after being shot by a 72-year-old man he allegedly attacked outside the man's home in California, police said. Officers responded to the incident at about 3:20 a.m. on Friday after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a gunshot being fired in the area of East Dudley and North Broadway Street in Fresno, the Fresno Police Department said in a news release. When officers arrived, they found a man in handcuffs with a gunshot wound to his midsection, the police department said.

They identified the man as David Gonzalez, 32, of Texas, an off-duty federal agent assigned to ICE. The incident comes as President Donald Trump's administration is facing fresh scrutiny over its aggressive immigration crackdown and the actions of federal immigration officers after an ICE agent shot a man in the neck while seeking to make an arrest in New York City on Thursday, prompting protests. Police said investigators determined that a woman had arrived home and found Gonzalez asleep on her front lawn.

She alerted her 72-year-old father, who lives with her, and he went outside to ask Gonzalez to leave. The victim produced a firearm and fired one shot at Gonzalez, striking him,” police said. Shortly afterward, the daughter's boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived on the scene and placed Gonzalez in handcuffs, police said.

Gonzalez was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where police said he was receiving treatment while the investigation into the incident continues. Police said he was in custody for felony assault charges while the injuries of the man and his daughter were being evaluated. Police did not identify the man or his daughter.

Gonzalez is facing charges including battery likely to cause great bodily injury, felony vandalism and battery, police said. The 72-year-old will not face criminal charges based on the information gathered during the investigation, police said. He was legally in possession of the firearm used in the shooting, police said.

Police said it was not clear why Gonzalez was in the area at the time of the incident, but they said it was confirmed he was off-duty and alone at the time. Newsweek has contacted the Fresno Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and ICE for further comment via emails sent outside regular business hours. Fresno Police said there was no confrontation between the department’s officers and ICE officials.
