Prices displayed are informational. Biogen logo is seen at its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts By Tada Images Biogen Inc. (BIIB) is a global biotechnology company that develops and commercializes therapies for serious and complex diseases. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Biogen has built a strong presence in neurology, specialized immunology, and rare diseases, with a portfolio spanning multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Alzheimer's disease, ALS, and other conditions.
Companies worth $10 billion or more are typically classified as "large-cap stocks," and Biogen, with a market cap of $32.1 billion, fits the label perfectly. Biogen's core strength lies in its deep neuroscience expertise and a portfolio of established therapies for complex neurological and rare diseases. Its long-standing research capabilities, specialized commercial infrastructure, and broad pipeline also provide scale and expertise that smaller biotech rivals can find hard to replicate.
Biogen has been on a strong run, with the stock sitting just 4.3% below its 52-week high of $225.80, reached on Sept. 3. Shares of BIIB have gained 8.8% over the past three months, surpassing the S&P 500 Index ($SPX), which has rallied marginally. The bigger picture tells a much stronger story.
Biogen is up 22.8% year to date, more than doubling the S&P 500's 10.8% gain. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has surged 50.8%, comfortably outpacing the index's 14.7% advance. The technical picture also backs the stock's momentum.
BIIB has remained above its 200-day moving average throughout the past year and has traded mostly above its 50-day moving average since mid-April, despite some minor fluctuations. Biogen is showing investors that its growth story is moving well beyond its legacy multiple sclerosis franchise. Strong commercial execution has pushed its newer growth products ahead of the MS business for the first time, fueled by rapid uptake of high-dose SPINRAZA, contributions from newly acquired Apellis products SYFOVRE and Empaveli, and a new at-home dosing option for Alzheimer's treatment.
