Verizon users report widespread mobile service issues as outage complaints spike past 2,400 on Downdetector.

Verizon Wireless customers across the United States reported widespread service disruptions Tuesday, with thousands of users flagging issues on Downdetector throughout the afternoon. ET, more than 2,400 reports had been submitted, indicating a sharp spike in complaints well above the platform's typical baseline activity. The majority of users experiencing problems cited mobile phone service failures, though additional reports referenced 5G Home Internet and mobile internet disruptions.

Downdetector’s data indicated that 49 percent of complaints involved mobile phone connectivity, followed by 23 percent tied to 5G Home Internet. Downdetector’s live outage map showed clusters of activity in Phoenix, Scottsdale, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles, suggesting the issue affected multiple major metro areas rather than a single regional node. Verizon, which provides mobile, landline, and broadband services nationwide through its Verizon Wireless subsidiary, had not immediately commented on the cause of the outage.

The company’s service dashboard did not show a confirmed nationwide disruption, leaving it unclear whether the spike in reports reflected a localized technical failure, a broader network issue, or a temporary service anomaly. Newsweek has reached out to Verizon for information on the outage. Mobile network outages occur when an unexpected disruption affects multiple cell sites simultaneously, cutting off voice, data, and messaging services for users in the affected area.

When this happens, customers who sign in to My Verizon may see a Network Notification that explains which services are affected and how repairs are progressing. Verizon does not provide a universal restoration timeline. The length of an outage depends on the cause, the number of sites affected, and how quickly technicians can complete repairs.

The company urges customers to check its network status page for real‑time updates. If no outage is listed but service remains down, users are directed to basic troubleshooting steps such as restarting the device, confirming coverage, and ensuring Airplane Mode is off. During an outage, Verizon recommends connecting to Wi‑Fi and enabling Wi‑Fi Calling to maintain voice and data access.

Devices automatically reconnect once service is restored, though a restart may help re‑establish a fresh signal. Customers who lose service for more than 24 consecutive hours due to a Verizon‑confirmed outage may request a bill credit within 180 days if they are on a standard monthly plan. Recent disruptions include localized issues on August 18, a spike of 2,400+ reports on August 12.
