On Monday, Virginia Tech's head football coach James Franklin took the podium to discuss his team's upcoming matchup against the Maryland Terrapins. The beginning of Monday's press conference featured a bizarre moment between Franklin and team beat reporter Michael Howes of the Baltimore Sun. Howes greeted Franklin before starting to ask him a question about his relationship with Maryland's head coach Mike Locksley.
Franklin interrupted the question several times, repeating "Hey Michael" until the question stopped. "Michael, how are you doing? I'm saying how are you doing?" Franklin said.
Howes later explained his side of the interaction on social media. "James Franklin really wanted to know how my day was this morning," he wrote. "Couldn’t see him on Zoom and thought the audio was glitching.
My apologies, James." Franklin and Virginia Tech opened up their 2026 season with dominant wins over VMI and Old Dominion. Now, they face their toughest test yet against Maryland. Saturday's game will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
