Japan adopts measures to stamp out invasive longhorn beetle

Japan is moving to stamp out the red-necked longhorn beetle, an invasive species that threatens trees including cherry and plum. The government adopted a series of control measures on Friday, such as halting the expansion of areas damaged by the pest, scientifically known as Aromia bungii, by 2030, as well as providing financial support to affected local governments. The central government will hold a briefing session for municipalities as early as this month.

The government will encourage 22 of the country’s 47 prefectures, where damage has been confirmed, to develop regional pest control strategies, while urging other regions to implement preventive measures and remain vigilant for early detection.
